CHENNAI: Music directors were honoured by the Cine Musicians' Union on Sunday. Music directors T. Rajendar and Gangai Amaran, playback singers Mano and B.S. Sasirekah, and 21 other musicians were honoured by the Cine Musicians' Union at an annual awards function on Sunday. Violin maestro T.N. Krishnan, who presided over the event and presented the awards, said that practice was a must for any musician. "In my early days, my father who was my guru used to say that I must practice a lot on my violin. I used to practice for nearly 20 hours. It is now nearly 24 years and I still practice as much. For me, practice is like a tapas. This has given me the required strength to perform well even today." Thanking the union for giving him the award this year, Gangai Amaran said the union played a big role in getting the money required by musicians to do their work. The union should have a library, a recording room, an institute to train youngsters, and offer pension to old musicians in need. "Some of my colleagues and I could come together and conduct programmes to collect money," he said. At the function, which was sponsored by music director Devi Sri Prasad, the musicians were presented with a shawl, a gold ring and a certificate.
