Voters complain of deletion of names

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Several voters in the city have complained that they could not exercise their franchise in the local body elections as their names were found deleted in the electoral rolls for reasons unknown to them. They had cast their votes in the last Assembly election held in May this year. Their names were found in the electoral rolls when they checked on the Election Commission website.

Some voters complained though their new door numbers were incorporated in the electoral rolls during the Assembly elections, only old numbers were found in the electoral rolls used in the civic polls. A State EC official said the commission did not have separate electoral rolls and it followed the rolls given by the Public (Elections) Department.

Powers to include or delete voters from the electoral rolls were with Assembly Electoral Registration officers.
