CHENNAI: Students of the Institute of Distance Education of the University of Madras are irked at the delay in getting study material. While first year students have few complaints, senior students pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate courses say they are yet to receive study material though nearly four months have passed since the academic year started. Many have received the schedule for the contact classes to be conducted by the IDE to enable distance learners to interact with professors and teachers. However, there was no indication that they would get the books soon, they said. The IDE has over 1.30 lakh students enrolled in PG and UG courses, with B.Com as the most popular branch. A second year BBA student of Anakaputhur near Chennai says he got the last year's study material only in January 2006, though the enrolment was done four months before. And he is yet to receive the II year study material. "We are unable to contact anyone responsible at the IDE. No one responds when we call them over telephone. When we go in person, the staff say they are not clear about the day of despatch of the material," says the student. A senior official of the IDE acknowledged that the printed material was delayed but a schedule of despatch was being drawn. Next week, "we hope to schedule the despatch by streamlining the procedure of distribution."
