BANGALORE: An armed gang allegedly opened fire at Krishna alias Korangu and his accomplices in Hiriyur Police Station limits in Chitradurga district on Monday night when they were being escorted to Chitradurga Jail after a court hearing in Bangalore. According to Chitradurga Superintendent of Police K.L. Sudhir, one of Korangu's accomplices and undertrial prisoner, Deepu, was killed after a bullet hit him in the chest. Korangu, who was attacked with swords and choppers, suffered grievous injuries on both hands and is admitted to the Government Hospital in Chitradurga. Mr. Sudhir told The Hindu that the District Armed Reserve Police had escorted Korangu and eight undertrials to Bangalore in connection with hearing of a murder case. On their way back, the police stopped near Javagondanahalli at around 7.30 pm after an undertrial demanded food. When the police and the undertrials were about to board the vehicle after having tea, an armed gang opened fire at the undertrials before attacking Korangu with choppers, Mr. Sudhir said. Though the police retaliated by opening fire, the armed gang escaped under the cover of darkness. A search has been launched in Chitradurga and Tumkur districts. Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), Bangalore, Gopal B. Hosur told The Hindu that a police team from Bangalore would leave for Chitradurga for investigation.
