NEW ARRIVAL: Coast Guard personnel checking the depth and safety of the navigation route before the arrival of the interceptor craft at the fishing harbour.
PUDUCHERRY: The interceptor boat allotted to the Coast Guard base station here would arrive at the fishing harbour on Thursday, according to a CG official. The boat, which had armaments including anti-aircraft and machine guns, would be permanently berthed at the station he told The Hindu . It was basically meant for anti-smuggling and anti-poaching operations. It could also be used to render assistance to fishermen in case of emergency, the official added. "Patrolling would be intensified along the Puducherry coast after the boat was berthed. The highly stable boat could cruise around 50 km per hour," the official noted. On Tuesday, CG men conducted a physical check to find out the depth and safety of the navigation route near the fishing harbour. The arrival of the CG boat coincided with the expected opening of the marine police station at Karaikal in a few days time. The maritime agency would be assisting the marine policemen in patrolling the coast from Marakanam to Nagapattinam. The CG had already trained 21 police men, who had been posted in the marine police station. "We would be closely associating with the territorial administration in monitoring the coastline," he further said. The CG Station here already has an interceptor craft.
