News Analysis
The report "Apex court concerned over appalling conditions of slaughterhouses in State" (Tamil Nadu, October 16, 2006, page 4) stated that there were part time doctors in some slaughterhouses getting a meagre monthly salary of Rs. 80. A reader wondered whether it was a typographical error. The Legal Correspondent clarifies that it is Rs. 80. A reader objects to the heading "Not kosher" (Editorial, October 13, 2006) and the concluding sentence ("At the very least, the lack of transparency and the haste with which the procurement was pushed through show that the Barak deal was not at all kosher."). The reader says that "not above board", which has no religious association, would have served the author's intention well. "Not kosher", meaning not genuine and legitimate, has no religious connotation. It is an informal expression and was used in the editorial that related to a deal with Israel. It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible. Please specify the edition (place of publication), date and page.
