Yuki eases past Sudanwa

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Yuki Bhambri took Sudanwa Sitaram in his stride while posting a clinical 6-2, 6-3 victory in the boys' under-16 quarterfinals of the DSCL National sub-junior tennis championship at the DLTA Complex here on Tuesday.

The 14-year-old Yuki, who had won the under-14 title in the last edition, outplayed Sudanwa, a trainee at the Mahesh Bhupathi Tennis Academy (MBTA), Bangalore. He may not possess a big game or an imposing frame, but Yuki plays with a maturity beyond his age.

Sudanwa had dropped only five games in all in the previous three rounds and had knocked out the second-seeded Vinayak Sharma for the loss of just two games. He, however, could not get down to playing his normal game against an opponent who had a strong mind.

The focus in the under-14 section was on Irfan Hussain, son of coach Ilyas Hussain. Irfan outplayed the top-seeded Samip Mehta 6-4, 6-2 after being down 1-4.

The results (quarterfinals):

Under-16: Boys: Vijayant Malik bt Abhijeet Tiwari 6-4, 6-2; Ankit Sachdeva bt Parul Verma 6-4, 7-6(4); Priyank Gangadharan bt Suraj Desai 6-1, 6-2; Yuki Bhambri bt Sudanwa Sitaram 6-2, 6-3.
