Puducherry: Lt. Governor Mukut Mithi, who is now in New Delhi, called on the Union Tribal Affairs Minister P.R. Kyndiah on Tuesday and sought recognition of five communities Irular, Kattunaicken, Malaikuruvan, Yerukula and Kuruman residing in the Union Territory as Scheduled Tribes (STs). An official release said that Mr. Mithi briefed the Union Minister that the matter had been pending for a long time with the Union Ministry. The recognition would enable them to derive the benefits of reservation and to join the mainstream, the release said. Mr. Mithi also met the Union Home Minister, Shivraj Patil and discussed with him important issues concerning the Union Territory.
