CHENNAI: Despite differences with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) over the violence during the October 13 Chennai Corporation polls, the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Tuesday expressed the hope that the process of identification of local bodies to be headed by the constituents of the Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA) would be completed without any hitch.
Wish list submitted
The CPI has handed over its wish list of the posts of chairpersons covering 28 town panchayats, 20 panchayat unions, five municipalities, four third grade municipalities and two district panchayats allotted to it as per the pre-poll agreement. The CPI-M will finalise its list shortly for the heads of 45 town panchayats, 25 panchayat unions, eight municipalities, four third grade municipalities and three district panchayats. Leaders of the Left parties were of the view that the DPA parties would have to adopt a "flexible approach." A final picture would emerge only after the results were announced. "Though differences persist between our party and the DMK over the untoward incidents during the elections in Chennai, we have agreed to cooperate with other parties in the DPA in electing chairpersons in the overall interest of the State," CPI (M) State secretariat member G. Ramakrishnan said. The DPA parties would have to alter their claim on the basis of the number of wards won by them in the local bodies where elections were fought on party symbols, leaders of the two parties said.
`Crucial to stand united'
State CPI assistant secretary C. Mahendran told The Hindu that it was crucial for the DPA partners to stand united to ensure that their collective strength enabled their nominees to become chairpersons of as many local bodies as possible. On the possibility of a realignment of political forces, State CPI (M) secretary N. Varadarajan said: "The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa's remark only betrays her wish. Our party always works out its strategy, taking the political developments in their entirety."
Misuse of power
State CPI secretary D. Pandian said: "Misuse of power in the electoral battle needs to be corrected and those responsible for it hauled up. Political realignments take place on a comprehensive policy evolved in the interest of the people." Mr. Varadarajan and Mr. Pandian said the two communist parties would focus on efforts to strengthen Left unity.
