IGNOU admission date extended

MADURAI: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has extended the last date for admission to its various courses to October 25. A late fee of Rs.200 will be collected from the candidates.

The courses include Master of Computer Applications (MCA), Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) and Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech), besides all Diploma programmes, a release from M. Shanmugam, Deputy Director, IGNOU, said. Those seeking admission can contact the office of IGNOU Sub-Regional Centre at P. P. Chavadi, Theni Road, Madurai. Fisherman injured

in firing

Thanjavur: A 20-year-old fisherman was injured in firing allegedly by Sri Lankan Navy while fishing off Jegathapattinam in Pudukottai district on Monday.

He was admitted to the Thanjavur Medical College hospital on Tuesday. Soundarajan, who received a bullet injury on his face, continues to be serious. He was fishing along with his father, Chinnappa, and brother, Chandrasekar, when the incident took place. They belong to Kottuchery in Karaikal. — Special Correspondent

Applications invited for Poompuhar award

Coimbatore: Poompuhar run by Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited has invited applications from craftsman/artisan for the 2005-06 Poompuhar State Award.

A release from Coimbatore Zonal Manager R. Kalaimani said interested craftsmen are requested to send in their application with one of their best handicraft item either to the Chairman and Managing Director of the Corporation, 759 - Anna Salai, Chennai 600 002 or the Poompuhar Show Room at Coimbatore on 1239, Big Bazaar Street on or before November 15, 2006.

The prize winning first five craftsmen would be getting a cash prize of Rs 20,000, four gram gold medal and a certificate. Application forms could be availed from the Poompuhar showrooms and offices. — Staff Reporter

Chamber plea to extend deadline

CHENNAI: Tamilnadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has appealed for an extension of the deadline for filing of income tax returns by assessees liable to tax audit and corporates by at least two months.

Chamber president S. Rethinavelu, in a press release, said a communication appealing for extending the deadline from October 31 to at least December 31 has been sent to Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram. It cited the festival season and the time required for the corporate assessees to get acclimatised with the mandatory e-filing of tax returns as reasons that necessitate such an extension. — Staff Reporter

CBI searches advocate's house

CHENNAI: The Central Bureau of Investigation on Tuesday conducted searches in the house and office of an advocate M.Sivamani in Cuddalore in connection with the case relating to fake insurance claim. Documents have been seized during the operations and further investigation was on, a CBI official said. — Special Correspondent

Puducherry: Secretary of the Puducherry unit of the Centre for Indian Trade Unions K. Murugan has called upon the Government to enhance the ex-gratia payment for Deepavali to Rs. 2.000 from Rs.400 announced by the Government to workers in the unorganised sectors such as construction . He said all those enrolled till September should be covered under the payment as was done last year.

Cracker sales

Puducherry: District Collector of Puducherry G. Theva Needhi Dhas has said in a release here on Monday that those granted licences to sell crackers in connection with the forthcoming Deepavali could sell them only on the premises identified by the authorities.

There should be no sale either in open air or on pavements and other unauthorised sites.

Sellers should take all fire precautionary measures. Any violation would invite strict legal action.

More kerosene

ERODE: The tribals of Erode district will get ten litres of kerosene for their family card from October, said Collector D.

Karthikeyan in a press release on Tuesday.

An order from Tamil Nadu Cooperative, Food and Consumer Protection Department said tribals in Thalawady, Guthiyalathur in Sathyamangalam taluk and Burgur in Bhavani taluk now received only three litres of kerosene a month.

As many as 21,300 family cardholders would be benefitted.

Sufficient stocks of kerosene were also transported to the respective ration shops.

Firecracker sale

ERODE : Tiruchengode Cooperative Marketing Society will sell firecrackers estimated at Rs. 60 lakh for Deepavali, said Special Officer of the society S. Karikalan.

Inaugurating firecracker sales of the society at Tiruchengode, he said the firecrackers would be sold at Sankari, Velagoundenpatty, Mallasamudram and Konganapuram, in addition to three shops run by the society in Tiruchengode. Last year the sales was Rs. 47 lakhs.

Mr. Karikalan said that the turnover of the society was Rs. 60 crore. It was also running an LPG cylinder distribution agency with a customer base of 45,000. Joint Registrar of Cooperatives, Namakkal district M. Mohan was present. - Staff Reporter

House burgled

Nagercoil : The police are on the lookout for some unidentified persons, who burgled the house of a teacher on Tuesday.

According to the police, some persons entered the house of Jebamani (55) of Puthenthurai near Ethamozi when she went to school and decamped with 21 sovereigns of gold ornaments and Rs.1500 in cash.

Woman arrested

Nagercoil : The police arrested a woman for selling illicit arrack on Tuesday.

According to sources, a team noticed a woman moving in a suspicious manner at Aralvoimozhi. Ballammal (48) of the same area told the police that she was selling illicit arrack.

Dome camera fixed

Tirunelveli: A dome camera — Third Eye — has been fixed on North Car Street of the town here, where textile showrooms are located.

Besides making the surveillance more effective, the camera, activated by the Commissioner of Police, Tirunelveli, G. Uma Ganapthi Sastry on Monday, provides a sense of security to people.

Run over by train

TIRUNELVELI : P. Thagapandian (71) of Sugar Mill Colony in Tirunelveli Junction was run-over by a train engine near here on Tuesday. The police said he was going for a morning stroll. The accident took place when he was crossing the rail track near Thatchanallur. — Staff Reporter

"Shift mortuary from hospital"

RAMANATHAPURAM : The District Chamber of Commerce and Industry has urged the Health Department to shift the mortuary from the Government Hospital at Mudukulathur. A statement said the mortuary was situated near the bus stand and bad odour emanating from it was hazardous to health.

Engineer arrested

RAJAPALAYAM : Central Investigation Bureau sleuths arrested a sub-divisional engineer of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited on a charge of accepting bribe from a contractor on Tuesday. They caught Ganesan (43) while accepting Rs. 1,500. He had demanded money from the contractor, D. Manivannan, to clear the monthly bills for cleaning three telephone exchanges. Water level

MADURAI : The water level in the Periyar dam stood at 120.3 feet (136 feet) with an inflow of 2,577 cusecs and a discharge of 1,063 cusecs. The level in the Vaiai dam was 58.96 feet (71 feet) with an inflow of 1,383 cusecs and a discharge of 41 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 5,476 mcft.
