PALAKKAD: M.P. Sorab (55 not out) and Sebastian Antony (39) guided Central Zone to 110 for two against South on the second day of the Jacob Trophy senior inter-zone championship at the Fort grounds on Tuesday. South was all out for 292 shortly after lunch. In reply, Central started off in style, scoring at close to six an over. Sorab lived dangerously, twice edging new ball bowler P. Manoj past the slip cordon for boundaries.
Sweet timing
But he soon grew in confidence and began to time the ball sweetly. Sebastian, who looked solid throughout, supported Sorab to a great extent. Before any further damage could be done, the umpires, on repeated appeals by the batsmen about bad light, called off play eight minutes early. The scores: South 292 in 120.3 overs (Vinan G. Nair 108, V.A. Jagadeesh 47, Anil Kumar three for 57, Shyamjit three for 81, Tinu Yohanan two for 57, V.S. Shiju two for 76) vs. Central 110 for two in 40.2 overs (Sorab 55 not out, Sebastian Antony 39).
Suresh cracks century
At Kollam, Suresh Krishnamoorthy cracked a fine century as Thiruvananthapuram finished the first day in a position of strength against Kottayam in the two-day under-17 inter-district cricket tournament at the Ashramam Maidan here on Tuesday. V.V. Kannan (77), R. Aravind (51) and Bipin Chatterjee (50) made useful contributions as Thiruvananthapuram posted an imposing 417 for six. At the Agriculture College ground, Sandeep (four for 32) had Kollam struggling at 88 for five at stumps against Alappuzha. Earlier, Monish Jayan continued his fine form with the bat as he scored 71 to prop up the Alappzuha innings. But the Kollam bowlers, especially Arun Krishnan (three for 30), did well to restrict the Alappuzha's first innings to 220. The scores: Thiruvananthapuram 417 for six in 90 overs (Suresh Krishnamoorthy 134, V.V. Kannan 77, R. Aravind 51, Bipin Chatterjee 50) vs. Kottayam Alappuzha 220 in 57.5 overs (Monish Jayan 71, S.K. Sabin 40, R. Rejith 26, Arun Krishnan three for 30) vs. Kollam 88 for five in 12 overs (Abhijith 34 batting, Sandeep four for 32).
