ONGOLE: All Indiramma villages should curb open defecation and provide clean drinking water to acquire Nirmal Grameena Puraskar (NGP) status by March next, said P Ganeswara Rao, Chief Engineer, Rural Water Supply.Addressing a workshop on NGP here on Tuesday, he pointed out that the State could recommend only 600 villages for NGP this year reflecting the poor status of sanitation and drinking water supply in the villages. He said Andhra Pradesh provided individual sanitary latrines to 50 per cent of the households and stood second only to Kerala which achieved 95 per cent coverage. But utilisation was appallingly low and stood at 18 per cent in Andhra Pradesh.
