BANGALORE: Madras Engineering Group & Centre (MEG) emerged the champion in the State `A' division basketball league for the Prof. N.C. Parappa Memorial Trophy. On Tuesday, MEG maintained its unbeaten streak in the 10-team league with a 54-44 win over ASC. MEG, which had last won the title in 1995, broke Vijaya Bank's title winning streak after more than a decade. Burly Tinu Joseph and the speedy Lloyd Anthony gave nothing away in the early stages of the match but a string of missed attempts enabled ASC close the lead to 13-15 at the end of the first quarter. In the second, with Gautham converting, ASC took a slender lead for the only time in the match but it was short lived as Peter John's entry helped MEG tighten its grip with some speedy counters and fast breaks.
Poor third quarter
ASC, with Rangan and Dharampal chipping in with regular baskets, managed to stay within striking distance but an atrocious third quarter spelt its doom as MEG took the game away building a 41-27 lead. The fourth quarter saw both teams fumble and play some scrappy basketball but MEG was never threatened though veteran G.R.L. Prasad came up with some fine underboard shots for ASC. MEG thus won all its matches while ASC finished with six wins and three losses. Earlier, BEML (Mysore) defeated State Bank 44-35 in a match to decide relegation.
The results: MEG 54 (Tinu Joseph 12, Sweeto Francis 10) bt ASC 44 (Gautham 10). BEML (Mysore) 44 (Keshava 16) bt SBI 35 (M. Sridhar 10).
