Mangalore violence: official to give report

BANGALORE: Home Minister M.P. Prakash on Tuesday said Additional Chief Secretary A.K. Agarwal has been asked to submit a detailed report on the recent violence in Mangalore. Mr. Agarwal would submit the report in 15 days, he told presspersons here.

Asked whether the Janata Dal (S) would field a candidate for the byelection from Chamundeshwari constituency, Mr. Prakash said leaders of the JD (S) and the Bharatiya Janata Party were holding talks on fielding a common candidate against the former Deputy Chief Minister Siddaramaiah of the Congress. — Special Correspondent

Chief Minister orders release of subsidy

Bangalore: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has instructed the Finance Department to immediately release subsidy to farmers to buy mini-tractors, power tillers and other agricultural implements.

According to a press release, the Chief Minister took the decision in reaction to reports that said the Government had organised a function to distribute tractors and tillers without releasing subsidy. Caution would be taken to ensure that such lapses were not repeated, the release said. — Special Correspondent

Daily wage workers plan indefinite dharna

Bangalore: The Karnataka State Government Daily Wage Employees Federation, Hubli, will stage an indefinite dharna from October 30 in Bangalore to press for regularisation of service.

Federation president K.S. Sharma said in a press release here on Tuesday that daily wage employees were demanding regularisation as "a gift on the occasion of Suvarna Karnataka." As a forerunner to the dharna, daily wage employees would hold demonstrations in all district headquarter towns on October 22. The Government, the release added, should keep its earlier promise of regularising their services. — Special Correspondent

HMT Watch Factory bags Rs. 51-cr. order

TUMKUR: HMT Watch Factory here will soon start manufacturing gold-plated watches, Chairman of HMT Ltd. M.S. Zahed has said.

Mr. Zahed, who was here to participate in the 115th birth anniversary celebrations of Babasaheb Ambedkar and the 99th birth anniversary celebrations of Babu Jagjivan Ram, organised by the factory's Workers' Welfare Union on Tuesday, said the Tumkur watch unit had bagged a Rs. 51-crore order from Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. for the supply of gold-plated watches.

HMT Watch Factory has been facing a financial crunch for the past five years and around 500 of its 2,000 employees were allowed to take voluntary retirement. — Staff Correspondent

Indian Reserve Battalion centre

BANGALORE: The Indian Reserve Battalion has decided to set up a centre on 238 acres at Hosahalli in Koppal district. Home Minister M.P. Prakash told presspersons here on Tuesday that the Union Government had released Rs. 12.5 crore for land acquisition.

The Home Department had decided to set up 11 more police stations in the State this year in places such as Shimoga, Shikaripur, Davangere, Nagamangala, Hampi, Hassan, Navanagar in Bagalkot and Bellary.

Deccan Aviation had decided to operate flights from Bangalore to Goa via Toranagal in Bellary district from November 1. Twenty-one policemen would be posted at the Toranagal airport, Mr. Prakash said. — Special Correspondent

HUBLI: The Hubli Police have booked 86 cases against vehicle owners for careless driving and speeding and collected a fine of Rs. 25,800 in two days, a release said. — Staff Correspondent

Man trampled

HASSAN: An elephant trampled Suresh (30) of Bagadalu village in Bysore forest range in Arkalgud taluk on Monday evening, according to police. They said that a wild elephant trampled to death Suresh, who was working in his field. His brother Chandrashekar escaped unhurt. The villagers held a demonstration against the alleged apathy of the Forest Department in addressing the problem of elephant menace faced by people in Malnad region. They did not allow forest officials to shift the body for some time. However, police convinced the villagers and helped in cremating the body.

Hacked to death

HASSAN: Parvathamma (75) of Kurukanamane village was allegedly hacked to death by her son Huvanna Gowda on Tuesday morning in Yesalur Police Station limits.

Relatives of the deceased had filed a complaint in this regard, the Yesalur police said.

HASSAN: One person was killed and another injured, when the motorcycle they were riding hit a stationary autorickshaw near a bridge in Sakleshpur.

Woman dead

Raichur: Sonia (18), wife of Bheemanna, reportedly sustained burns when she was lighting a kerosene stove at her house in Kallur village near here on Sunday. She died at the District Civil Hospital. The Sirwar police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Commits suicide

Raichur: Rajamma (45), wife of Rudramuni, allegedly committed suicide after pouring kerosene on her body and setting herself ablaze at her house in Maski town on Sunday. She died at the District Civil Hospital. The Maski police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Dharna

GULBARGA: Members of the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS), affiliated to the CPI, staged a dharna on Tuesday in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office seeking release of dues of sugarcane growers who supplied cane to the Aland Cooperative Sugar Factory, which has now been leased out to Belgaum-based Renuka Sugars. In a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, they pointed out that the transport charges due to the growers for the cane transported to the factory during 2002-03 season were yet to be settled. Besides, payment was not made for fuel wood supplied to the sugar factory. The protesters sought the Deputy Commissioner's intervention. — Special Correspondent

Killed in accident

BIJAPUR: A tempo driver died on the spot when his vehicle hit a roadside tree on the city outskirts here on Tuesday. The name of the deceased was given as Mallppa Mahanthappa Hallagi (30) of Tangadagi village in Muddebihal taluk. Police attributed the accident to rash driving.

This and many other facts about the well-known poet the late Manjeshwara Govinda Pai will be made known at the two-day seminar titled "Govinda Pai Samskruti Loka," here from Wednesday.

The seminar is being organised by Surana College and the southern centre of Kendra Sahitya Akademi. K.E. Radhakrishna, principal of the college, said on Monday that the seminar was part of the annual feature focusing on the life and works of Kannada writers. — Staff Reporter

TUMKUR: As many as 32 members of Varalakshmi Streeshakthi Swashaya Sangha, a women's self-help group, said in a press release here on Tuesday that drunken people troubled the devotees visiting the Mahalakshmi shrine at Goravanahalli near Tumkur. The SHG members said there were two wine shops close to the temple. About 5,000 people visited the every day. They urged the Government to close down the two wine shops. — Staff Correspondent

No stops for

some trains

HUBLI: South Western Railway has decided to do away with the stop at Gauribidanur fwithdraw the facility of stoppage at Sambre station for the following trains from November 1 because of poor patronage, according to a release.

The trains are Miraj-Belgaum Passenger Train, Miraj-Belgaum Passenger Train, Belgaum-Miraj Passenger Train, Hubli-Miraj Passenger Train and Miraj-Londa Passenger Train. Similarly, Guntur-Hubli Passenger Train (303) and Hubli-Guntur Passenger Train (304) will not stop at Gadiganuru Station from November 1. The stoppage at Gauribidanur for Kacheguda-Yashawanthpur-Kacheguda Express will be continued for three more months. — Staff Correspondent

Rajkumar memorial

BANGALORE: Rajajinagar MLA N.L. Narendra Babu has urged the Chief Minister to constitute a high-level expert committee that includes members of Rajkumar family to develop the late thespian's "samadhi" into a monument.

In a letter to Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, Mr. Narendra Babu said Rajkumar fans were disappointed because the Government had so far not taken any action in this regard.

The monument should include a mini-theatre, a rangamandira, a park, a glasshouse and a library.
