Was taking drugs for asthma, says Akhtar

Mumbai: Pakistan fast bowler Shoiab Akhtar who had tested positive for consuming a banned anabolic steroid nandrolone had informed the International Cricket Council through the Pakistan Cricket Board that he was taking therapeutic drugs, certified by doctors in Pakistan, for asthma.

On Monday, the PCB had said that as per the ICC's anti-doping policy it had carried out tests internally on 19 players in September and that the results were sent to the World Anti-Doping Agency laboratory in Malaysia for further analysis.

According to a reliable source 15 players from other countries, none from India — have informed the authorities that they were taking therapeutic drugs. The ICC has appointed a medical commission in Mumbai to examine these drugs. — Special Correspondent
