`Move to expel Registrar has political motive'

Staff Reporter

Kannur University and pro-Congress unions on a collision course

  • `Vice-Chancellor under pressure from Syndicate members'
  • `Allegations against Registrar baseless'

KANNUR: The Kannur University Democratic Front (KUDF), a collective of pro-Congress unions of teachers, staff and students, has accused the newly constituted Syndicate of the university of acting with a hidden agenda to expel the Registrar with a political motive.

KUDF chairman Khader Mangad and convener Babu Chathoth told a press conference here on Tuesday that Vice-Chancellor P. Chandramohan was forced to take decisions under duress by some Syndicate members nominated by the Left Democratic Front (LDF) Government.

They said that the present Syndicate was trying to convert the university into a venue to settle organisational scores and carry out partisan activities.

Accusing the Syndicate of making moves for backdoor appointments, they said that the present propaganda and agitation against Registrar K.M. Abdur Rasheed was a bid to expel him from the university to clear all obstacles in making the appointments.

The allegation that the Registrar had tampered with the minutes of the Syndicate meeting was found to be baseless by an inquiry conducted by the Vice-Chancellor, they said.

The decision of the last Syndicate meeting to constitute a sub-committee to probe the allegation against the Registrar was a misuse of power and violation of university statutes, they said.

The KUDF comprises the Kerala Private College Teachers' Association, Government College Teachers' Association, Association of Kannur University Teachers, Kannur University Staff Organisation and the Kerala Students' Union.

    'Abandon move'

Challenging the present Syndicate and the pro-Left university unions to prove the allegation of minutes tampering by the Registrar, they said that the Syndicate should abandon the move to politically victimise university officials. The sub-committee formed to probe into the allegation included Syndicate who members were in the forefront of the earlier agitation demanding expulsion of the Registrar, they said.
