Kozhikode: Three houses were attacked and a library and an arts club set on fire in fresh cases of violence involving activists of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) in the Koyilandy area on Tuesday. Activists attacked the houses at Puliyacheriyil and set ablaze the M.K. Keluettan Smaraka Reading Room and an arts club, "Jwala," at Poyilkavu in the morning. No casualities have been reported. Over 5,000 books of the reading room were gutted, the police said. Stones were thrown at the houses of the Bharatiya Janata Party activists Patteri Karunakara Kurup, K.P. Mohanan, village officer and former district president of NGO Sangh, and Puthiyottil Damodaran at Muchukunnu. The windowpanes of these houses were destroyed. The RSS shaka office came under attack. In another incident, a mob destroyed the flag post of the Democratic Youth Federation of India near the house of Koyilandy MLA P. Viswan. The police said these incidents were a sequel to the clashes between the RSS and CPI(M) a week ago. Nineteen activists of both the organisations were injured in the clashes following an argument over the functioning of an RSS shaka in the area. The injured persons had been admitted to Koyilandy Taluk Hospital and the Government Medical College Hospital. A group allegedly belonging to the RSS assaulted a CPI(M) worker, K. Balakrishnan, 36, on Monday evening in Koiylandy. Mr. Balakrishnan was admitted to the medical college hospital with injuries in his head and hand. The incidents on Monday were a result of the attack on a CPI(M) worker, the police said. A large contingent of police has been posted in the area following the incidents. Cases have been registered at the Koyilandy police station. An all-party meeting was also held in the evening. Kozhikode Rural Superintendent of Police T.M. Aboobaker visited the area.
Attack condemned
The Kozhikode District Library Council in a statement condemned the attack on the reading room and club.
