Special Correspondent
Thiruvananthapuram: KPCC general secretary and former MP V.S. Sivakumar on Tuesday accused the Government of trying to scuttle the city development projects initiated by the previous United Democratic Front (UDF) Government. In a pressnote issued here on Tuesday, he said the Congress would be forced to launch an agitation if the Government continued to throttle the development works. "Many of the projects that were expedited by the UDF Government have gone into a deep freeze over the last five months. The Government has failed to establish a mechanism to coordinate various departments. As a result, the projects are languishing," he said. Mr.Sivakumar alleged that the Left Democratic Front Government had failed to utilise the funds allotted by the Union Government for urban development programmes. He pointed out that a Rs.4-crore project sanctioned by the Ministry of Shipping for the renovation of the Parvathy Puthanar canal had failed to materialise. "Another major project to clean up the Veli-Aakulam lakes and the City Roads Improvement Scheme are also in limbo. The construction of the flyover at Bakery Junction is proceeding at a snail's pace," he added. Mr.Sivakumar also urged the Government to step up the pace of the Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Programme.
