TIRUPATI: The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) headed by former Speaker and Finance Minister Y. Ramakrishnudu has underscored the need for subjecting the TTD accounts to auditing by the office of the Accountant General (AG) as in the case of Government departments. The panel expressed this view on Tuesday in course of a review of the TTD accounts, expenditure, accounting system and so on. Mr. Ramakrishnudu said that the panel would make a specific recommendation to this effect to the Government in its interim report. Noting that the TTD's accounts were now being subjected only to internal audit and audit by Local Fund (LF) authorities, the panel chief and its members have reportedly expressed reservations over the veracity of the audit. More so, when its annual budget was as huge as Rs.700 crores. The committee's remarks come in the wake of a query it had raised on the fate of numerous audit objections involving over Rs. 400 crores raised by the previous panel in the year 2001. Mr. Ramakrishnudu said that the panel would soon depute a sub-committee to look into the audit objections. It was in this context that the committee reportedly suggested that it was time the TTD got the whole system reviewed by experts and suitable structural and systemic modifications made to make it look foolproof and credible. He also said that subjecting the TTD accounts to audit by the AG would go a long way in enhancing the image and credibility of the organisation in the eyes of the public.
