KURNOOL: W. Sitaram, retired professor of Neurosurgery called for a voluntary force that is trained in handling and shifting the accident victims to the nearest hospital. Addressing a meeting at Kurnool Heart and Brain Centre (KHBC) in connection with the World Trauma Day here on Tuesday, he said the airway of the patient must be kept unblocked to ensure proper breathing.
Deaths avoidable
In most of the accident cases, blood and fluids get collected in the air causing death by choking. Also, it was a common mistake that the neck of the patient often gets damaged in the process of shifting. If general public were trained in such basics, many deaths could be avoided. He said more than the preparedness to treat accident cases, steps to check occurrence of roads accidents should be taken. He suggested that every primary health centre (PHC) on the national highways should be equipped to handle accident cases apart from the trauma care centres. Deputy Transport Commissioner Ramasri said fatigue in drivers due to overwork was the main cause of accidents. In some cases, bad roads also contributed to accidents. In Kurnool district, auto rickshaws caused more accidents than trucks. G.R. Chandrasekhar, neuro-surgeon at KHBC welcomed the gathering. Senior Surgeon Y. Satyanarayana and others were present.
