Women tied up, jewels robbed
Staff Reporter
TAMBARAM
: Armed, unidentified men barged into the house of a garment unit-owner, threatened two women at knife-point, tied them up and took away jewellery weighing 43 sovereigns and Rs. 1.54 lakh in cash at Neelankarai on Tuesday.
Vilvaraj, running a garment unit, left for work at 10 a.m. A little past noon, two youth knocked at the door of his house on Second Cross Street in Raja Gardens and introduced themselves as air-conditioned mechanics to his wife Krishnamala, 28. Just as the woman opened the door, they overpowered her and tied her to a chair. Rani, servant maid, was also tied up.
They snatched the jewels Krishnamala was wearing, located keys of the almirah and took away jewels and cash. A special crime is investigating.
Incidents of inmates being targeted by robbers while they were alone at home are common in residential areas along the Old Mamallapuram Road and East Coast Road.
The problems of `grille offender' in Chitlapakkam and Tambaram areas and `bureau puller' in Madipakkam area, have already been posing a challenge to law enforcers in the southern suburbs.
