Five pocket-pickers held

Two women were caught red-handed

CHENNAI : The Mambalam police arrested five persons including two women on charges of stealing cash and other valuables from shoppers in the commercially busy T. Nagar.

The police said two women were caught red-handed when they lifted a wallet belonging to a passenger identified as Banumathi when she was travelling in a bus after shopping in T. Nagar. Immediately, they were handed over to the Mambalam police.

After an investigation, cases were registered against Chinnaponnu (35) and Priya (27) of Mariamman Koil Street, Salem, and remanded to judicial custody.

Three others nabbed

Similarly, in another case, the police arrested J Shafi (30) of Kottar, B Vijaykumar (29) of Aralvaimozhi in Kanyakumari district and G Murugan of Tirunelveli district on charges of stealing the purse from Venkatraman of Gingee in Villupuram district when he was shopping on Renganathan Street, T. Nagar.
