CHENNAI: Though a modified Act is in place to prevent immoral traffic, it is a complex subject as it impacts both parties (victims and visitors), Director-General of Police D. Mukherjee said here on Monday.

Speaking at a function held to release a book, "Immoral traffic - Prostitution in India", authored by Deputy Superintendent of Police V. Sithannan, Mr. Mukherjee said though there were laws to prevent prostitution, getting social legislation enforced attracted displeasure from many quarters.

More than the offence and the laws, the social problems and the stigma faced by the victims needed to be addressed by citizens, he said. He expressed the hope that the book would be useful not only to law-enforcers but also to non-governmental organisations working in rescue and rehabilitation of those caught in the profession. Madras High Court judge K. Mohan Ram, who released the book, lauded the efforts of the author in presenting authentic information with an analysis and ways and means of rescuing and rehabilitating the victims.

The judge stressed the need to sensitise the society to the ills of such an offence.

Greater Chennai Police Commissioner Letika Saran appreciated the author for bringing out various instruments of law available for safeguarding child victims of trafficking and prostitution.

Inspector-General of Police (Training) T. Rajendran, IGP (North Zone) K. Radhakrishnan and Apple Publishing International Editor R. Vadivelu also spoke.
