Guwahati: President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on Tuesday came out with a mantra of "one village-one product" for development of the rural masses in the northeast. He was inaugurating a workshop-cum-exhibition on bio-diesel here before winding up his three-day visit to the region. The President underlined the need for value addition to products from the region's rural areas to take them to the international market. Mr. Kalam urged the North Eastern Development and Finance Corporation to take steps for value addition to the products. He specially mentioned about the silk products from Sualkuchi in Assam and cultivation of anthurium flowers in remote villages of Mizoram. Earlier in the day, he visited the villages and interacted with weavers and farmers. The President visited a duck-rearing centre at Gumoria village on the city outskirts and interacted with women self help group beneficiaries. The President urged agricultural universities and central agricultural research institutes in the northeast to network with the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) and the National Oilseeds and Vegetables Oils Development Board to create a common knowledge base on Jatropha, specific to the northeastern region.
