HYDERABAD: The Revenue Department has decided to crack the whip on offenders putting domestic borewells for commercial use and selling water round-the-clock in Patel Nagar Colony, Nampally. The crackdown will begin on Wednesday. Faced with depleting groundwater resources, this has been long pending demand of the residents of Patel Nagar. Domestic borewells in the area had become a major source for rampant commercial exploitation. There are three major spots within a half kilometre radius in Patel Nagar where domestic borewells are being brazenly exploited for commercial purposes. Huge water tanks with a capacity of 14,000 litres each make a beeline to this colony throughout the day for filling up of water and supplying it to parts of the twin cities. The indiscriminate use of ground water has dealt a huge blow to the ground water levels of the nearby residents. The Mandal Revenue officials had already requested the Central Power Distribution Company to cut off the power lines to residents who are perpetrating the offence which is illegal under Andhra Pradesh Water, Land and Tree Conservation Act (WALTA).
