KOCHI: Mural paintings have always brought in appreciation and admiration for the artists' skill and dedication. Very much a part of the country's heritage, these skills were dying till about 15 years ago, when a few dedicated names started a serious effort in promoting the art. One such institute is the Indian School of Art, promoted by noted artist K.K. Warrier. An ongoing workshop at the School at Ravipuram is yet another attempt at creating awareness about the art. While the school has classes on all types of paintings, mural paintings are the focus here. There are different styles of work involved in mural paintings. In the Mattancherry palace, one can see three distinct styles involved, which is basically evolved over time. The old style, which is more decorative than the one promoted by the Guruvayur style, is more intricate and time consuming, said artist Warrier. Though we promote the simpler style, we give all help to those who want to take up the older style, he said. At the workshop, which will be on till Saturday, single figures will be taken up. Mr. Warrier and his son Sasi Warrier, Principal of the institute, will take classes.
