Swasraya Bharat-2006 concludes

DRDO bags award for outstanding pavilion at the science expo

KOCHI: Swasraya Bharat-2006, the national self-reliance week celebration, concluded here on Tuesday.

At a function, the display set up by various laboratories of the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) bagged the award for the outstanding pavilion at the Science and Technology expo and three awards were also given to the innovative products and best-seller at the crafts bazaar.

Both the events were part of Swasraya organised by the Swadeshi Science Movement, Kerala.

The Swasraya week is organised in honour of President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and his birthday was also celebrated on Sunday.

I.N. Maharana, General Manager of Indian Rare Earths Limited, was the chief guest at the valedictory function. He gave away the best pavilion award to DRDO, which had 12 labs from all over India participating in the expo.

George Varghese, Assistant Director (Handicrafts), Thiruvananthapuram, gave away the award for best handicrafts to Gopinathan from Thiruvananthapuram for developing his own craft with buffalo horns.

Sukrithi, an organisation from Wayanad, was given the second best award for innovative items. Hyder from Lucknow was given the best-seller award for his embroidery works.

M. Chandrasekharan, chairman of the seminar committee, which conducted a number of seminars at various colleges in and around the city, gave a summary of the seminars. A summary of the Student's Meet programme and a summary of Entrepreneurship Development Programme, which were the other highlights during the 10-day event, were also presented.

H.T. Suresh, Regional Chief of HUDCO, presided. P.S. Radhakrishnan, vice-president of SSM, welcomed the gathering and C.L. Narendra Sharma, organising secretary of SSM, proposed a vote of thanks.
