Vijayant enters final

NEW DELHI: Chandigarh lad Vijayant Malik lived up to his stature as the top seed and moved into the final of the boys' under-16 section with a 7-6(5), 6-4 victory over Ankit Sachdeva in the DSCL National sub-junior tennis championship at the DLTA Complex here on Wednesday.

Vijayant played with usual flair and punch to set up a semifinal clash against Yuki Bhambri.

Class act

The lean Yuki was a class act as he dismissed the challenge of an erratic Priyank Gangadharan for the loss of two games.

Yuki made the under-14 final as well and was tested by Chetan Pandit of Andhra Pradesh. Yuki played well when pushed and unleashed forceful strokes and big serves.

In the girls' section, Rashmi Teltumbe and Nova Patel made the finals of both the under-16 and under-14 sections.

In a lively doubles final in the boys' under-16 section, Karunuday Singh and Abhijeet Tiwari prevailed against Vijayand Malik and Shiva Sangwan 10-4 in the match tie-break. Karunuday had recently won the National junior under-18 doubles title in Chennai with Venkat Iyer.

The results: Boys: U-16 (semifinals): Vijayant Malik bt Ankit Sachdeva 7-6(5), 6-4; Yuki Bhambri bt Priyank Gangadharan 6-1, 6-1.

Doubles (final): Karunuday Singh/ Abhijeet Tiwari bt Vijayant Malik/ Shiva Sangwan 6-7(9), 6-4, 10-4.

U-14 (semifinals): Sumeet Shinde bt Irfan Hussain 6-1, 6-4; Yuki Bhambri bt Chetan Pandit 6-4, 6-3.

Doubles (final): S. Siddharth/ Aniket Wakankar bt Shahbaaz Khan/ Vishwesh Sinha 6-7(2), 6-1, 10-5.

Girls: U-16 (semifinals): Rashmi Teltumbe bt Tanvi Shah 7-5, 5-7, 7-5; Nova Patel bt Divija Mandava 6-3, 6-0.

Doubles (final): Prachi Nadkarni/ Tanvi Shah bt Ratnika Batra/ Garima Vatwani 6-2, 6-4.

U-14 (semifinals): Rashmi Teltumbe bt Gopika Kapoor 6-4, 6-2; Nova Patel bt Ankita Raina 6-2, 6-0.

Doubles (final): Divija Mandava/ Rishika Sunkara bt Anushka Bhargav/ Nikkie Gargi 6-3, 7-5.
