This Day That Age
Addressing a public meeting at Gauhati on October 17, Prime Minister Nehru declared that Naga hostilities were no longer a problem - either the hostilities were over or they were going to end soon. The Prime Minister, who spoke for about two hours, said the Naga hostiles were a "misguided lot" and should not be considered as "enemies of the country." The rebels would be treated with consideration. He said the Nagas had erred and the Government was trying to bring them to the right path. "The Nagas are our fellow citizens and they have equal claim on India as people of any other part of the country." He urged the people, particularly the youth, to realise the full implications of the opportunities thrown open to the country after Independence and work hard for economic betterment of the people. He said he was pained to find that a strange atmosphere of unrest seemed to have come over the country. There were troubles over religious issue, language issue and even on the question of caste system. At a time when unity was most needed people were frittering away their energies over trifling matters.
