Free rice and sugar for Deepavali

It will cover 3 lakh families in the Union Territory

Puducherry: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy said that he had ordered distribution of 10 kg rice and two kg sugar free of cost to each of the 3 lakh ration card holders for Deepavali.

Addressing mediapersons here on Wednesday, he said that the administration would incur an expenditure of Rs 4.5 crore. The distribution would start from Thursday.

Mr. Rangasamy said that with a view to ensure that the rural areas were also kept clean, around 3,000 volunteers would be deployed for operation garbage scheme.

He said that he had asked the Department of Revenue and Disaster Management to make available free house site pattas to the Scheduled Tribes living in Puducherry. The Government had already identified five communities (800 families) as coming under the ST category. They would also be sanctioned financial assistance to start dairy projects. Conceding the fact that there should be proper management of traffic here, Mr. Rangasamy said that an expert body would be requested soon to study the situation and recommend to the Government ways and means for proper management of the traffic system. The Rs.140-crore Government medical college, being constructed at Kadirkamam, would start functioning with hospital, college and hostel facilities from 2007-2008 academic year.
