Plan panel for cuts in subsidy
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI:
The Planning Commission has advocated an increase in tax collection and cut in subsidies along with imposition of user charges on public services to fund irrigation and infrastructure sector projects for higher economic growth in the next five years.
The Commission has noted that huge investments in infrastructure, irrigation, education and healthcare sectors would necessitate an increase in budgetary resources for the Plan to about 9.7 per cent of the GDP, on an average, from 7.15 per cent during the Tenth Plan period.
A check on non-Plan expenditure is the other primary way of garnering more resources. This could be achieved by curtailing subsidies through effective targeting at those who deserve such sops, it said.
