NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday carried out searches at the residential and official premises of National Highways Authority of India officials. A case was registered against them for alleged cheating, forgery and abuse of official position. The CBI alleged that the officials misused their position in the execution of sub-standard work between Panipat and Sonepat section of NH-1. The raids were carried out by the agency's anti-corruption wing at seven places in Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh and Lucknow. Cases were registered against a general manager (technical), project director and manager (technical) and others under sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Corruption Act. According to the first information report, during 2003-04 a private contractor entered into a criminal conspiracy with officials of the project implementation unit, Sonepat, and other unknown persons to cheat the NHAI and obtained a payment of Rs. 6.25 crores without proper execution of the works. The contractor submitted a forged experience certificate and balance sheet to fulfil the eligibility requirement.
