Karnataka blanks Chandigarh

CHENNAI: Karnataka carved out a fine 3-0 win over Chandigarh in a Group A league match of the National sub-junior football championship for the Mir Iqbal Hussain Trophy at the Nehru Stadium on Wednesday.

It is a U-15 competition but if seeing is believing then it was quite tough to pick many who look their age from what was on show on the inaugural day.

The Karnataka boys deserve praise. They were fast, showed good passing skills and above all there was that eagerness to provide a good finish at the goal-end. That is how Sanju Kumar deservedly got a header on target after Deepak had sent a long aerial pass in the 40th minute.

Chandigarh tried to get back into the game but was let down by poor finishing. Karnataka doubled the lead in the 54th minute through Vignesh and four minutes later Deepak added one more to complete the tally.

Earlier, defending champion Mizoram, despite not fielding two of its regular midfielders, tamed Sikkim 2-0 in Group A. Substitute Lalrinpuia scored the goals in the 52nd and 86th minutes. — Special Correspondent
