Corrections and clarifications

In "Fact, fiction or the fog of drugs?" (Editorial page, October 18, 2006), the name of the Mumbai Police Commissioner was incorrectly as given M.N. Roy. It should have been A.N. Roy.

In "Weaving gifts for President" ("Variety" page, October 17, 2006), the sentence was: "It [Sualkuchi, near Guwahati] also exports variety of Muga silk products worth Rs. 1,200 annually to markets in the U.S, Japan and Europe." A reader felt the figure was too low. It was a reporting error and should have been Rs. 1,200 lakh.

"Five pocket-pickers held" was the heading in the Chennai edition (October 18, 2006, page 3). A reader says that neither the standard dictionaries nor a dictionary with Indian words have the entry "pocket picker". "Pickpocket" is a noun meaning "a person who steals money, wallets, etc., from the pockets of people, as in crowded public places"; as a verb (two words) it means "to steal (a wallet, money, etc.) in the manner of a pickpocket."

With reference to the correction in the Young World (October 13, 2006) on the article "Father of the nation", a reader points out that the modern state of Gujarat was formed on May 1, 1960, and not 1956, as was published. Saurashtra, Kutch, most of Baroda State and the former princely states of eastern Gujarat were merged with Bombay in 1956.
