GURGAON: Haryana drew with defending champion Goa 2-2 in the group `A' quarterfinal league match of National football championship for Santosh Trophy here on Wednesday. With this result Haryana bowed out of the tournament. Goa's qualification in to the semifinals, however, depended on the result of the final group league match between Punjab and Bengal. Goa finished with four points from three matches while Haryana ended its campaign with two points from two draws and a loss. Punjab was on four points from a win and a draw and Bengal on three. Goa took the lead when Fredy Mascarenhas scored off a penalty in the 61st minute. Mascarenhas and Peter Carvalho were the architects of that move when Haryana skipper, Pawan Kumar, brought down Carvalho in the box. Mascarenhas sent a grounder into the right of the post while the Haryana goalkeeper Novjot Singh dived the other way.
Haryana strikes back
But Haryana struck back immediately through Pawan Kumar. Goa defender Filipe Gomes, with no Haryana striker within his reach, sent the ball out to hand a crucial corner to Haryana. Sandeep Malik took a perfect shot and the lanky Pawan Kumar headed it in to restore parity in the 65th minute. The trio of Sanjeev Yadav, Parveen Arora and Devesh then set out to create an opportunity from nothing in the 76th minute. Sanjeev completed one of the classic goals scored so far in the Santosh Trophy here. Sanjeev pushed ahead and the three strikers exchanged the ball among them before Parveen set up Sanjeev in the box. On the run Sanjeev avoided collision with the Goan goalkeeper Luis Barreto before shooting Haryana into a 2-1 lead. With 10 minutes remaining, the floodlights went off due to power failure and the match was held up for 15 minutes. On resumption, Goa scored the equaliser through Nicolau Borges.
Kerala-Maharashtra match drawn
On Tuesday, Kerala and Maharashtra played out a 1-1 draw. Maharashtra and Kerala are now on four points each after two encounters in the group `B' quarterfinal league. Kasif Jamal scored for Maharashtra and K.M. Abdul Nausad equalised for Kerala. Thursday's matches: Kerala v Karnataka, 4.45 p.m.; Maharashtra v Tamil Nadu, 7 p.m.
