PALAKKAD: A defiant unbeaten 89 by wicketkeeper C.M. Deepak saw Central Zone gain two points for its first innings lead against South on the final day of the Jacob Trophy State senior inter-zonal cricket championship at the Fort Maidan on Wednesday. Deepak's knock turned out to be crucial as Central was tottering at 174 for five at one stage. The 26-year-old, who crafted a 87-run partnership with Anil Kumar (43) for the seventh wicket, played a calculated innings. Earlier, South skipper Suresh Kumar chose to start the day with his spinners and the plan clicked. Leg spinner Rakesh had the in-form Sorab (71) rattled by a delivery that kept pretty low. In his very next over, skipper Ajay Kuduva offered a regulation catch to Sujith at slips. The experienced Suresh did his bit as well. He had Manikandan trapped leg before for 35. But, Deepak and Anil put an end to the collapse with a solid partnership that swung the match Central's way. The scores: South 292 in 120.3 overs vs. Central 341 for nine in 126 overs (Sorab 71, C.M. Deepak 89 not out, Sebastian Antony 39, Anil Kumar 43, Manikandan 35, Suresh Kumar three for 57, Rakesh three for 92). Sports Reporter
