`Software contributes to 25 p.c. exports'

Special Correspondent

IT fast spreading its tentacles in the country

  • India's software exports stand at US $ 14 billion
  • By 2010 computers may operate at 20 Giga Hz, says IISc scientist

TIRUPATI : N. Balakrishnan, Chairman, Super Computer Education and Research Centre, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore has said that software professionals whose average age is 27, were contributing a whopping US $14 billion annually (roughly around Rs.70,000 crores) by way of exports accounting for 25 per cent of India's total exports. He was delivering a lecture on `Trends in Information Security' organised on Wednesday at SV University under the aegis of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunications Engineers (IETE) and Physics Department of the university.

Mr. Balakrishnan, also the Associate Director of IISc, noted that information security was a target for India while for others it could be a weapon and pointed out that the way IT was spreading in the country, it would be no wonder if nations would divide themselves as `cyber-nations and non-cyber-nations.' He said by 2010, a computer would be developed which would not only have a billion transistors operating at 20 Giga Hz clock-speed but would also understand any language in the world. While noting that IT had spread the message of speed, he however, regretted that the IT revolution was becoming handy for unethical purposes.

    Vice-Chancellor S.V.University S. Jayarama Reddy presided.
