VIJAYAWADA: For Municipal Commissioner Natarajan Gulzar, watching The Hindu -Young World Quiz- 2006 on Wednesday was a walk down memory lane. The chief guest of the day recalled, while giving away prizes to winners and other teams, his own experience of representing his school in several quiz competitions and the enjoyment that he derived from it.
Gulzar's pat
"All of you have done very well," he said, congratulating all the six participating teams of the regional round and, more particularly, the winning team of K. Abhishek and J. Bharath from NSM Public School, which trounced all other teams with a score of 62. The duo would go to Madurai to take part in the national finals on November 14. At the end of the tough screening round, which saw 444 teams from 156 schools writing down answers to 25 questions, six top teams were selected for the regional round.
Top six
Besides the team from NSM Public School, pairs from Nalanda IIT-JEE Academy (P. Raghavendra Pradyumna and N. Siva Madhav), Andhra Loyola College (N.V.S. Dattu Virinchi and Satyaki Shekhar), Dr. K.L.P. Public School (K. Gnana Chaitanya and Makineni Aditya), Nirmala High School, Machilipatnam (Md. Arif and P. Vivekanand) and Vidya Vikas English Medium School, Avanigadda (M. Venkateswara Rao and K. Hitesh Bhargava) made to the final six. The winning team left behind runners-up Nalanda IIT-JEE Academy with a score of 38. The scores of other teams were: Andhra Loyola College - 35; Dr. K.L.P. Public School - 29; Nirmala High School - 28; and Vidya Vikas English Medium School - 23.
Gift hampers
While all the six teams walked away with lots of prizes, gift hampers were also given away to `best outstation team' (Little Flower English Medium School, Guntur), `second best outstation team' (Sri Gowthami Public School, Rajahmundry), `best team name' (The Clever Gang in a Big Bang from M.S.R. English Medium High School, Vijayawada), `second best team name' (Hot Wind - Cold Thunder from Sri Vijnana Vihara English Medium School, Vijayawada) and `third best team name' (The Curious Kittens from Indian Springs, Vijayawada).
