18 stolen laptops recovered; four held

NEW DELHI: Four young men, including a software engineer, have been arrested by the Rohini police in North-West Delhi for alleged involvement in theft of laptops. The police claim to have recovered 18 stolen laptops at their instance.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Manish Kumar Agarwal, the Rohini police on Tuesday received a tip-off that Kamal Sharma, who had been declared a proclaimed offender in a laptop theft case, would come near the Rithala Metro rail station in his Hyundai Accent car to dispose of some stolen laptops.

The police laid a trap and arrested him along with his accomplice Kulbeer. Three laptops were recovered from their possession.

During interrogation, the accused allegedly confessed to their involvement in more than 200 cases of laptop thefts in Delhi, Haryana and Punjab.

Birds rescued; two arrested

NEW DELHI: A brown fish-owl and about a hundred other birds of various species have been rescued by the Shakarpur police in East Delhi. Two persons have been arrested.

According to the police, People For Animals informed them that a person had bought some owls to sacrifice them as part of a "tantrik" ritual. The police raided the house and arrested one Raj Narayan after they recovered the carcass of a brown fish-owl from there.

During interrogation, Raj Narayan allegedly disclosed that he had bought the owls from Mukesh, who used to sell brids at Kabutar Market near Red Fort. The police subsequently arrested Mukesh and recovered from him the birds. Both the accused have been booked under the Wildlife (Protection) Act.

Delhi-Gurgaon metro to start by June 2010

NEW DELHI: The Haryana Government on Wednesday said that the 14.5-km Metro railway line between Qutub Minar and Sushant Lok linking the Capital with Gurgaon would be operational by June 2010 before the start of the Commonwealth Games.

Talking to media persons after the project was cleared by the Group of Minister, Shakuntala Jakhu, Secretary, Town & Country Planning, Haryana, told media persons here that the Haryana Government would spend Rs. 688 crore on construction of the metro linkage and the process of identifying and acquiring land has already been undertaken.

"The metro plan has been initiated on a war footing to provide faster connectivity between Delhi and Gurgaon, and being a Government body we are committed to providing better facilities for our State's residents," she said.
