Srividya
Thiruvananthapuram: Veteran south Indian actor Srividya died at a private hospital here on Thursday after a prolonged illness. She was 53. The end came at 7.55 p.m. and her brothers and sisters-in-law and some members of the film fraternity were present. Srividya, also an accomplished Bharatanatyam dancer and singer, had been undergoing treatment for cancer for the last three years and was admitted to the hospital on October 17. Born on July 24, 1953, Srividya acted in over 800 films in several languages over a 35-year period. Daughter of eminent Carnatic singer M.L. Vasanthakumari, and Tamil actor `Vikadam' Krishnamoorthy, she acted at the age of 13 in the Tamil movie `Thiruvarutchelvar.' Srividya made her entry into Malayalam films opposite Sathyan in `Chattambikkavala' and went on to portray several memorable roles, including the ones in `Chenda,' `Vilkkanundu Swapnangal,' `Kaattathe Kilikkoodu' and `Ente Sooryaputhrikku.' She won the Kerala State award for Best Actress thrice for her performance in `Idavazhiyile Poocha Mindapoocha,' `Rachana' and `Daivathinte Vikrithikal.' Srividya will be cremated with state honours here on Friday. Kalaimamani award Our Chennai Staff Reporter writes: Srividya, who got recognition in Tamil films with a memorable performance as a classical singer in K. Balachander's 1972 film 'Apoorva Raagangal', won the Kalaimamani Award of the Tamil Nadu Government in 1977. She also won the best actress (special) award for her role in `Madhura Geetham' in 1977-78. She did over 200 movies in Tamil, starring with veterans including Sivaji Ganesan, Kamal Hassan and Rajnikanth. Her last movie was `London' in 2005. Kamal Haasan, in a message, said Srividya battled cancer with valour and dignity. The versatile and talented artist would be missed by the industry and the audience.
