Rs. 100-crore grant for Kumbh Mela

Lauds industrialisation programmes in Uttaranchal

Haridwar: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday backed the change of name of Uttaranchal to Uttarakhand and announced a special grant of Rs. 100 crore for the 2010 Kumbh mela in Haridwar. "We are changing the name of the state to Uttarakhand, a name dear to your hearts," he said after laying the foundation stone of Hero Honda's two-wheeler plant here.

The Prime Minister lauded the recent industrialisation programmes in the State. "Uttaranchal is seeing all round development in all areas of economic and developmental activity...it is already far more advanced on social parameters than its neighbour Uttar Pradesh," Dr. Singh said.

Uttaranchal is slated to go to polls next year. The State has seen a rise in industrial activity following the fiscal incentives announced by the Centre. Investing companies get a 10-year excise holiday and a five-year break in income tax, with reduced levels in the next five years.

Dr. Singh also visited the residence of his cousin, H.S. Kohli, to condole his death recently. He was accompanied by his wife.
