An auction that would take Indian art to the `next level'

Gaurav Vivek Bhatnagar

NEW DELHI: While art auctions by well-known auctioneers are known to fetch stupendous sums for works by known artists, an attempt will be made to take Indian art also to this "next level'' at the first auction of modern and contemporary Indian paintings to be held at the The Grand hotel in Vasant Kunj this coming Wednesday. Prior to the auction, all the works of art would be displayed at an exhibition at the venue on Tuesday.

According to Triveda chairperson Nina Pillai, the group has been fortunate in collecting a major body of works from the early 1900s to the present day.

Triveda director Hari Ram Shastri said 132 works of arts and 13 old and rare books would go under the hammer at the auction.

The sale is especially strong in its representation of the art of Bengal starting with oils and gouache works including "Santhal woman and Young Boy'' by Jamini Roy, "Abandoned'' by Jogesh Seal and "A Woman with a Water Jar'' by Hemendranath Mazumdar, followed by fine examples of Abanendranath Tagore, Nandalal Bose, Gaganendranath Tagore, D.B.Roy Chowdhury, Kshitindranath Mazumdar, Abdur Rahman Chughtai, Manishi Dey and Sarada Ukil.

Again, from Bengal, there are two magnificent paintings by Bikash Bhattacharjee dating back to 1979 and 1981, recognised as the most significant period of his oeuvre, an acrylic of Angkor Wat by Shyamal Dutta Ray, as well as three major paintings by Sanjay Bhattacharya, epitomised by a large canvas of his Rajiv Gandhi Series, and other works by Ganesh Haloi, Sunil Das, Suhas Roy, Lalu Prasad Shaw and Chittravanu Mazumdar.

A highlight of the auction will be a spectacular "Himalaya View'', painted in 1930s by Nicholai Konstantinovic Roerich.
