Mulayam Singh Basti (U.P.): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav on Thursday criticised the State Election Commission's directive to suspend the holding of programmes to distribute unemployment allowance and Kanyvidya Dhan cheques in view of the upcoming local bodies polls. The Election Commission had yesterday sent a letter to the Chief Minister's principal secretary, divisional commissioners and district magistrates to suspend such functions between October 20 to November 3 following Governor T.V. Rajeswar seeking a ban in view of complaints from various opposition parties. Mr. Yadav, while addressing a public meeting here, said, "Such programmes had been going on before the announcement of the dates for polls for local bodies and as such they should continue." The Chief Minister highlighted the achievements of his Government during its over three years in office. He also warned of action if ineligible girls were given the cheques under the Kanyvidya Dhan scheme and said that the girls could write to him directly about their problems. Mr. Yadav lashed out at the Centre for its policies on wheat and sugar.
