SALEM: The just-concluded local body polls in Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts threw up some very interesting episodes to the fore. In the Konkanapuram union in Salem district, Rani Periyathambi became the panchayat president of Koranampatti village while her husband Periyathambi won one of the Konkanapuram Panchayat Union council wards on a DMK ticket.
Man, three sons win
In Omalur town panchayat, O. K. Ekambaram, and his three sons contested as Independents and got elected. In Dharmapuri district, a former teacher to his student in the Kethireddipatti village panchayat president elections. In Koothanatham village panchayat in Namakkal district, a candidate died of heart attack after losing in elections to president's post. In the election to Ward 12 of the Kalappanaickenpatti town panchayat in Namakkal district, two candidates tied with 116 votes. The poll official drew lots to decide the winner.
Go into hiding
The three independent candidates who won Wards 5, 11 and 13 in the Namakkal Municipal elections went into hiding fearing `abductions' from DMK and AIADMK. These independents were to play key roles to decide the chairman of the Namakkal Municipality now. The prominent losers in the Salem Corporation polls included the Salem Urban AIADMK secretary and a former MLA, Venkatachalam, and Salem Urban Congress secretary Panneerselvam. The other losers included a narikurava woman in Ward 45 and a transsexual Radhika in Ward 18. Both forfeited their deposits too.
All in family
Brinda Chezhian, a daughter-in-law of the State Agricultural Minister, Veerapandi S. Arumugam, retained the president post of the Poolavari Agraharm village in Veerapandi union while the minister's cousin Parapatti Suresh (DMK) won a district panchayat council ward. The younger son of the Minister Veerapandi S. Raja is already an MLA.
