Tintu in a world of her own

THRISSUR: When she waits for the gun, all focussed and ready, you realise that Tintu Luka lives in a world of her own. And as she sets off on a scorching run, the rest of the girls just gasp and choke.

Just 17, the Kozhikode girl coached by P.T. Usha at her academy, went past a few records while winning the under-18 800m rather comfortably in the Trinity 50th State athletics championships at the Corporation Stadium here on Friday evening.

Her timing, 2:11.21 secs, was better than the under-20 and under-18 State records. For Tintu, who was returning to competition after a four-month break, it was her personal best.

"She can do a lot better if somebody pushes her," said Usha, who was watching her best trainee at work.

Saranya sets record

Shotputter J. Saranya, the under-16 National champion, was another girl who hogged the limelight. The 16-year-old athlete at the Kollam Centralised Sport Hostel toppled the 24-year-old women's record in the event.

Only a few minutes earlier, she had won the under-18 girls discus gold.

Heavy rain in the evening forced the organisers to postpone a few events to Saturday.
