Kalam, Manmohan greet people

New Delhi: The President, Vice-President and the Prime Minister greeted the country on the occasion of Deepavali hoping that the `festival of lights' will lead to a happy society and a happy nation.

President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam said Deepavali is a celebration of the victory of good over evil and "may this year's festival open people's hearts with compassion for the needy and spare time to share their joy and happiness".

Extending his greetings, Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat said the festival emphasises the importance of values in our lives and unites all in common brotherhood.

Prime Minster Manmohan Singh said the festival celebrates the ascendancy of light over darkness. "It instils confidence and courage in the hearts of people that truth and righteousness are bound to prevail over the forces of evil," he said. — PTI
