Land acquisition over for Tata car project

Distribution of compensation cheques in final stage: West Bengal Minister

  • Sufficient land for industry in State
  • Opposition will face consequences for agitation

Kolkata : The West Bengal Government on Friday announced that the nearly 1,000 acres required by Tata Motors to set up its small car project at Singur in Hooghly district have been acquired.

"Acquisition of the land at Singur is complete and the distribution of compensation cheques are now in the final stage," Land and Land Revenue Minister Abdur Rezzak Molla told newsmen at the State secretariat.

To a question, he said there was sufficient land for industry in the State. The State Government was now almost ready to give possession of the land to the Tatas for setting up the Rs. 1000 crore project, which would manufacture its Rs. 1 lakh car. The cars are scheduled to roll out in 2008.

Asked about the agitation by Opposition parties, including the Trinamool Congress and Congress, against acquisition of agricultural land for industry at Singur, the Minister said they would ``face the consequences.''

Tata Motors Managing Director Ravi Kant had earlier given an end-of-the-year deadline to the State Government for the land acquisition. — PTI
