THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It was a day to remember the last king of Travancore, Chithira Tirunal Balarama Varma, on Sunday, his 94th birth anniversary. At a colourfully decorated `Panchavadi,' Chithira Tirunal's final resting place, floral and musical tributes were offered from early Sunday morning. The programme was organised by the Chithira Tirunal Smaraka Samithi. Playback singer Arundhati led students of music in rendering various compositions of Swathi Tirunal. The head of the ruling family of erstwhile Travancore Uthradrom Tirunal Marthanda Varma led family members in offering floral tributes. Ministers C. Divakaran, M. Vijayakumar, P.K. Sreemathy and T.U. Kuruvila lit the lamp to signal the beginning of the commemoration programmes. Mayor C. Jayan Babu, Samithi president Palode Ravi, MLA V. Surendran Pillai, Chief Secretary John Mathai, actors Balachandra Menon, Manianpilla Raju and Jagadeesh were present. Mr. Balachandra Menon inaugurated the Sree Chithira Tirunal painting contest held at the Kowdiar palace. An exhibition of rare photographs of the late king was also held. For the first time, the anniversary observance saw an exhibition of coins struck during the reigns of various kings of Travancore. Minister for Public Works T.U. Kuruvila inaugurated.
