Five students drown in the Krishna

Raichur: Five boys of a group of eleven students drowned in the Krishna near a bridge in Huvinahedgi village of Deodurga taluk on Friday. Police said the students, all studying at the tenth standard in Deodurga, reached the river in the afternoon on Friday to take a dip. As one of them drowned when he entered the river, four others, who tried to rescue him, also drowned. The deceased have been identified as Harish, Basawaraj, Sugappa, Suresh, Balakrishna. The police took the help of local people and fishermen from Kolur village to recover the bodies. — Staff Correspondent

Yediyurappa's tour

Bangalore: Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa will tour Belgaum and Dharwad districts on October 24 and 25. He will visit Gulbarga and Bidar on October 26 and 27. According to a press release, Mr. Yediyurappa is expected to call on senior Congress leader Prabhakar B. Kore who is undergoing treatment at KLES Hospital in Belgaum.

KPSC interviews

Bangalore: Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) will conduct interviews for recruitments to 73 posts of Senior Assistant Directors of Horticulture in the Department of Horticulture from November 2, 2006 to November 13, 2006. According to a press release, the interviews will be at the KPSC head office in Bangalore and interview notices have been sent.

Award

HUBLI: Jawahar Yallappa Kadam, Professor of Anatomy, Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) and Hospital, has won the Dr J.V. Bhatt Memorial National Award for the best original scientific research paper. Dr. Kadam's research paper was adjudged as the best research paper at the 22nd national conference of sexology held at Bangalore recently, a press release said. — Staff Correspondent

BANGALORE: Tickets for betting on races that are held in the Race Course here are freely available at all taluk and district centres, tempting gullible people into gambling and other vices, the Okkaligara Sangharsha Vedike and Progressive Lawyers' Forum have alleged. In a statement, Sampat Kumar and B, S. Killed in accident

RAICHUR: Karaveera Murthy (25), a postmaster at Huda branch in Sindhanur taluk, was killed when the motorcycle he was riding was hit by a NEKRTC bus on Lingsugur-Gulbarga Road near Gurgunta-Goudur Cross in Lingsugur taluk on Friday. Shivkumar, who was riding pillion, was injured in the accident and has been admitted to government hospital in Lingsugur town. The Hutti police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Two end life

RAICHUR: Tarangini, alias Mubera (25), wife of Dilerbeg, allegedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide at her house in Shakthinagar near here on Friday. The Shakthinagar police have registered a case. Ramesh (26) allegedly committed suicide by drinking pesticide at Bagalwad in Manvi taluk on Friday. He died at at the Rajiv Gandhi Super-speciality Hospital in Raichur. The Manvi police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Man dies of snake-bite

RAICHUR: Shamanna (25), son of Somanna, was bitten by snake while he was busy at his field in the limits of Araginamara Camp in Sindhanur taluk on Friday. He died at the government hospital in Sindhaur town. The Sindhanur Rural police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Bank wins prize

Bidar: The Bidar District Central Co-operative Bank has won the second prize instituted by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development for providing loans to the highest number of self-help groups in the State. NABARD Chief General Manager Deepak Gore presented the award to DCCB Managing Director Ashok Kumar in Bangalore recently. — Staff Correspondent

Yediyurappa's visit

DHARWAD: Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa will visit Hubli on October 24, according to an official release. The Deputy Chief Minister will arrive at Hubli around 9.30 p.m. after attending "Kittur Utsava" in Kittur and then leave for Bangalore by Rani Channamma Express Train at 10.20 p.m., the release said. — Staff Correspondent
