Ensure quality in relief works, says Minister

    Belgaum: Minister for Horticulture and district in-charge Shashikant A. Naik has asked officials to ensure quality while implementing relief works in flood and drought-affected areas in the district.

    The Minister, who reviewed the progress of relief works taken up in some of the affected areas with officials concerned recently, warned the latter against showing any laxity in implementing the works.

    He made it clear that he did not want families or elected representatives complaining about sub-standard works and negligence.

    According to official sources here on Sunday, in all 95 villages were affected by floods during July-August this year, of which 58 were fully surrounded by water and 37 partially affected. Communication links to 182 villages were affected.

    The floods in Krishna, Ghataprabha and Markandeya rivers resulted in crop loss. Standing crops on 28,493 hectares belonging to small and marginal farmers were lost owing to floods. The total loss to agricultural crops was put at Rs. 17.50 crore.

    Sources said works to repair roads and bridges affected by floods and excess rainfall had been taken up.

    The Government has taken up 197 relief works in five drought-hit taluks of Raibag, Ramdurg, Saundatti, Athani and Hukkeri.

    Drinking water was being supplied through tankers in Sidnal, Obalapur, Ramapur, Mudenur, Bannur, Venkatapur and Chennapur of Ramdug taluk, sources said.
